The most commonly used welding method for stainless steel is manual welding (MMA), followed by metal gas welding (MIG/MAG) and tungsten inert gas welding (TIG). Although these welding methods are familiar to most people in the stainless steel industry, we feel that this area deserves further exploration.
1. Manual welding (MMA) : Manual welding is a very common and easy to use welding method. The length of the arc is regulated by the human hand, which determines the size of the gap between the electrode and the work piece. At the same time, when used as arc carrier, electrode is also weld filling material.
2. MIG/MAG welding: This is an automatic gas shielded arc welding method. In this method, the arc is fired between the current carrier wire and the work piece under a protective gas shield. The wire, fed by the machine as a welding rod, melts under its own electric arc. MIG/MAG welding is still the most widely used welding method in the world due to its versatility and particularity. It is used in steel, non-alloy steel, low alloy steel and high alloy based materials. This makes it an ideal welding method for production and repair. When welding steel,MAG can meet the requirements of thin specification plates only 0.6mm thick. The protective gases used here are reactive gases such as carbon dioxide or mixed gases. The only limitation is that when outdoor welding is performed, the work piece must be protected from moisture to preserve the gas effect.
3. TIG welding: the arc is generated between the refractory tungsten electric welding wire and the work piece. The protective gas used here is pure argon, and the wire is not charged. The wire can be delivered either by hand or mechanically. There are also specific uses that do not require wire feeding. The material being welded determines whether direct or alternating current is used. When dc is used, tungsten electrode is set as negative electrode. Because of its deep penetration, it is suitable for different types of steel, but does not have any "cleaning effect" on the weld pool.
